Supervisor Adult Programs Manager

Time Required
two hours per week of tutoring time plus additional preparation and travel time
Place
any public place that is comfortable with both tutor and learner usually one of the public libraries or the Literacy Volunteers office
Duties
schedule and attend regular tutoring sessions with learner
arrive at tutoring sessions prepared and on time
notify the learner in advance of planned absence or expectations of delay
respond to reasonable needs and requests of the learner (regarding materials, learning strategies, the learning environment, etc.)
collaborate with the learner to determine long-term and SMART short-term goals
plan relevant, quality lessons for the learner with the learners goals in mind
record the learners progress
report learner progress and volunteer hours every other month, and cooperate in completing the annual reassessment of the learner
return borrowed materials when they are no longer useful to the tutor/learner pair
Qualifications
be at least 18 years old
have a high school or GED diploma
be willing to commit to at least two hours per week and 6 months of instructional time, or as agreed upon between tutor and learner
agree to meet in a Literacy Volunteers approved tutoring location
be able to and agree to get to the approved tutoring location without assistance from the program or the learner
have no record of conviction of any sex offense or any crime of violence
accept the Literacy Volunteers anti-harassment/anti-discrimination policy
attend an orientation
participate in the 15-hour tutor training class of the applicable type (basic literacy or ESOL)
demonstrate an ability to attend to a task for at least sixty minutes
be able to speak and understand English well enough to communicate clearly
be able to see well enough, given optimum lighting conditions and assistive devices if needed (such as magnifying devices, enlargement on a copy machine, large print), to differentiate characters on the printed page
demonstrate comprehension of material that is at least three reading levels higher than material that will be taught
demonstrate writing ability by writing a descriptive paragraph without assistance and with minimal errors
demonstrate behavior appropriate to working one-to-one with an adult learner, which excludes such behaviors as:
-insensitivity or disrespect toward others
-use of offensive language
-harassment (any behavior perceived as offensive, after being asked to stop)
-disruptive, loud behavior
-threatening behavior
-disregard for personal hygiene
-attendance at literacy activities under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Newsletter Mailing
We need volunteers to help prepare the newsletter for mailing
folding, taping, putting on labels, and sorting. This takes place at the end of each of the following months: February, April, June, August, October, and December.
Processing New Learners
We need volunteers to assist with learner intakes on a cycle of approximately eight weeks. Volunteering in this capacity may or may not require training in our assessment methods. Training is provided free of charge.
Used Book Sale
We need book collectors, sorters, and people to post posters around town in March, April, and May. We also need volunteers to work the book sale during the first weekend of June in Elmwood Park in Roanoke.
