There are two programs...Basic Literacy and English-for-Speakers-of-Other-Languages. A tutor in the Basic Literacy program works with an adult who wants to improve their reading, writing, and other basic literacy skills. A tutor in the English-for-Speakers-of-Other-Languages (ESOL) program works with an adult who has moved to the United States from another country and who would like to improve their conversational English skills.

2. What qualifications do I need as a tutor?
Top
You must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. You must be able to read and speak English. You do not have to know another language nor do you have to have teaching experience. A tutor training workshop is provided.

3. Where does the tutor/learner pair meet?
Top

Most tutors meet their learners in a local library. Others use one of the rooms at the LVRV learning center. We do not encourage tutors to meet their learners in their homes.

4. What is the time commitment?
Top
Two hours of tutoring time each week plus time spent in preparation and travel to the tutoring location.

5. Is there any training?
Top

There is a 15-hour tutor training course comprised of five three-hour classes. We also ask for a follow up session about a month later to give our new tutors an opportunity to provide us with feedback about their tutoring experience. The training sessions are designed to prepare our volunteers for both Basic Literacy and ESOL learners.

6. Is there any cost?
Top
There is a $20 materials fee to cover the cost of a book and handouts that are used in the training sessions.

7. When do I get matched with a learner?
Top
Each volunteer is matched with a learner during the fourth session of the tutor training workshop.

8. How do I volunteer?
Top
Call 265-9339 or to register for one of the tutor training classes .
