Much of the Winter 2004 lesson content may be found in earlier sessions. However, because this session was designed to meet the needs of a mixed-ability classroom (beginners to high-intermediate), certain modifications were necessary in order to meet the needs of every learner. Therefore, users will find that the lessons contained here have additional activities and procedures for more advanced students that run concurrently with intermediate-level lessons. Users should note that many of the advanced-level lessons and materials come in a project format in order to encourage a greater degree of collaborative and independent learning while allowing the instructor time to attend to the needs of lower level learners.
Each lesson plan contains specific behavioral objectives, the lesson's duration, lesson materials, classroom activities and assessment tools. A thumbnail sketch of each lesson is provided as a quick reference.
This orientation session features two interactive activities that allow learners to ask and answer questions about each other. Worksheets model correct questions and responses while giving the instructor useful insights into learner interests, learning styles and language competencies. Included in the session materials are questionnaires that give learners opportunities to express what they already know and what they want to learn. (2 hours)
Learners identify/review the basic parts of speech: nouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, personal pronouns and possessive pronouns. This lesson features practice with short dialogues from Joan Saslow's Workplace Plus 3. (2 hours)
Introduction to Computers and Computer-related Tasks
Computer literacy and English grammar activities focus on a review of the parts of speech from previous lesson (noun, verb, article, personal pronoun, possessive pronoun); conjugation of past and present tenses of the verbs "point," "click," "go," "find," "have," and "be;" construction of simple sentences about computer-related tasks (4 hours)
Introduction to Computers and Computer Vocabulary
Computer literacy activities focus on identification, pronunciation and spelling of elements of a computer work station; verbal and written comprehension of typical commands: "point to," "click on," "go to" and "find" (4 hours)
Introduction to Computers and Understanding Commands
Computer literacy and English grammar activities review of parts of speech and verb conjugations (continuation of Introduction to Computers and Computer-related Tasks); verbal and written comprehension of commands "left click," "right click," "double click," "close," "copy," "paste," "highlight," "minimize," "maximize," "open," "shut down," and "press." (2 hours)
This lesson integrates word processing and Internet skills with opportunities for verbal and written practice with prepositions of time and place. (2 hours)
Learners continue their study of prepositions from Using Prepositions #1 with prepositions of location and movement. Similar computer-related skills are stressed. (2 hours)
Final lesson in the preposition series with comprehensive review and quiz, plus more writing practice with dialogues. (2 hours)
Learners review noun plurals using "a lot of," "some," "many," a few," "much" and "a little" with count and non-count nouns before making generalizations with plural and singular nouns. (2 hours)
Learners differentiate between declarative sentences and commands, review prepositions of place and follow oral directions in activities that introduce land navigation using street maps. (4 hours)
Listening, speaking and writing skills are highlighted in this in-depth, follow-up activity to the previous class session. Learners write a dialogue giving directions from a starting point to a destination using a map and ads from the Yellow Pages. Lesson features the use of common driving vocabulary ("right-hand," "left-hand," "merge," "bear to the right/left," "continue") in addition to prepositions of place and use of ordinal numbers from 1-20. (4 hours)
Negative Imperatives and Idioms
Learners re-write and expand their Map Activity dialogues from previous lesson, inserting at least four new idiomatic expressions into their dialogues and three negative imperatives. (2 hours) |
