How Healthy are You?

Objectives:

  • The learner will use an online calculator to determine body mass index.

  • The learner will define lesson vocabulary.

  • The learner will demonstrate 75% or greater reading comprehension of "How Healthy are You?" article.

Duration:

 

     2 hours

 

Materials:

Activities:

  1. Teacher introduces lesson by asking the class, "How healthy are you?" After hearing responses, teacher follows asks individual learners they define good health.

  2. Teacher distributes lesson How Healthy are You? Vocabulary List and assigns 1-2 words per student as a jigsaw activity. Learners define words using personal or online dictionaries.

  3. Learners take turns defining words to the class; teacher assists where necessary.

  4. Teacher directs learners to the body mass calculator, explaining how body mass is determined.

  5. Learners find body mass number and enter it in the space at the top of the article.

  6. Learners take turns reading article aloud until article is completed.

  7. Learners complete quiz independently.

  8. Learners exchange papers and discuss quiz.

Assessment:

 

Teacher evaluates written responses to article, monitors oral responses during reading and discussion of article.
