Workplace Dialogue
Objectives:

The learner will add at least five slang terms to his/her personal list of favorite American slang.

The learner will define terms on "A Dialogue at Work" and answer related questions.

The learner will perform role play "A Dialogue at Work" with another learner.

Activities:

Learners go to http://www.manythings.org/slang/ and search for at least five more slang terms to add to their personal list of favorite American slang. Teacher monitors learners' choices and assists with word processing/computer skills.

Learners share one of their new slang terms with class, providing definition and example of its use in context. Students take notes as desired.

Teacher introduces "A Dialogue at Work" activity, writing new vocabulary on the board. Teacher elicits definitions from students and defines unfamiliar terms. Learners practice pronunciation of terms.

Teacher assigns learner pairs to perform dialogue in front of the class. Learners have 15 minutes to practice dialogue, are encouraged to be as animated and "natural" as possible, and to emphasize clarity and pronunciation.

Learners perform their dialogue.

Learners work individually to answer "A Dialogue at Work" questions. Class discusses responses.

Each learner chooses a slang term from "A Dialogue at Work" and assigns it to another learner. All learners have one minute to compose an original sentence using the slang term assigned to them. Learners read and discuss their sentences.
Assessment:
Teacher makes notes on learner's verbal responses, sharing remarks with each learner; teacher monitors written responses, offering corrections to grammar as required.
