Time is Money

 

Objectives:

  • The learner will make suggestions using four different formats.

  • The learner will list three characteristics of good employees and good supervisors.  

Duration:

 

    4 hours

 

Materials:

  • "Crossroads Cafe: Time is Money" worksheet

  • Crossroads Cafe VHS (tape #6)

  • Television

  • VHS player

  • Collaborations: English in Our Lives, Jann Huizenga and Jean Bernard-Johnston, Heinle and Heinle, 1996, pg.58

  • White board

Activities:

  1. Teacher distributes Collaborations: English in Our Lives, pg. 58 to learners. Teacher reads Question B; three learners read one reading selection each describing these employers. Learners express preferences and discuss reasons for their choice. Teacher lists learners' "qualities of a good boss" on board.

  2. Teacher distributes "Crossroads Cafe: Time is Money" worksheet; learners read and complete parts 1 and 2.

  3. Teacher introduces content of Crossroads Cafe tape #6 by giving brief description of plot.

  4. Teacher starts video, stopping when Rosa leaves the cafe. Learners answer Part 3 of worksheet and discuss as a class.

  5. Teacher resumes tape and stops when Rosa finishes her class. Learners complete Part 4 of worksheet and discuss with a partner. Teacher observes responses.

  6. Teacher starts tape, stopping after Emery suggests improvements to Mr. Brashov. Learners complete Part 5 of worksheet. Teacher monitors responses, assisting where necessary.

  7. Teacher plays "Culture Clip" without sound. Learners hypothesize what the clip is about. Teacher plays clip with sound. Learners respond to Part 6 of worksheet and compare answers as a class.

  8. Teacher resumes tape, stopping just before Emery reports on the progress at the cafe. Learners complete Part 7 of worksheet.

  9. Teacher starts tape and runs it until end of episode. Teacher asks learners what they think about Rosa's refusal of the "Best Employee" prize. Teacher asks learners to contrast Rosa in this scene with her earlier scene in class. Teacher asks learners if Mr. Brashov's decision to make Emery leave was a good one.

  10. Teacher instructs paired learners to create two amusing problems (for example, "My pet snake is somewhere in the car.") Learners exchange papers and write as many suggestions as they can using the four different formats in Part 1 of the worksheet.

Assessment:

 

Teacher checks written responses for proper grammar use, offers corrections as required.
