SlangQuest

 

Objectives:

  • The learner will use the internet to locate five slang terms that can be used in a conversation at work.

  • The learner will write one or more workplace dialogues using five slang terms found using the internet.

  • The learner will edit and role play one or more workplace dialogues. 

Duration:

 

    4 hours

 

Materials:

  • 3.5" floppy disk

  • Computer with Internet access

  • SlangQuest instruction sheet

  • Web site: http://www.manythings.org/slang/

Activities:

  1. Teacher defines the term "slang" using common examples ("bent out of shape," "hit the ceiling," "out of his/her mind," etc.)

  2. Teacher models SlangQuest activity by finding Web site, copying and pasting choices into Microsoft Word saving to a floppy disk under a file name.

  3. Learners compile a list of at least five slang terms using the SlangQuest directions. Teacher monitors learners' choices and assists with word processing/computer skills.

  4. Learners write as many dialogues as needed in order to use all five slang terms selected from the Web site. 

  5. Each learner places his/her dialogue(s) in a box; teacher forms learner pairs and distributes dialogues to each pair for editing. Learners ask other learners for definitions of unfamiliar slang terms as necessary; learners add new slang terms to their list of slang terms. Teacher monitors editing process before pairs return dialogues to the box.

  6. Learner pairs reach into box to select dialogue(s) for role play, teacher allowing two-three minutes for practice.

  7. Learner pairs role play their selected dialogues.

  8. Learners share lists the slang terms selected from Web site. 

Assessment:

 

Teacher monitors verbal and written responses of individual students and learner pairs.
