Using and Paying for Electricity: Understanding Your Bill

Objectives:

  • The learner will define key terms found on a sample electric bill.

  • The learner will review the past, present and future tenses of the verbs "pay," "owe," "receive" and "call."

  • The learner will conjugate the past, present and future tenses of the verbs "return," "restore," "send," "get."

     2 hours

 

Materials:

Activities:

  1. Teacher reviews correct conjugation of the verbs "pay," "owe," "receive" and "call."

  2. Teacher conducts completion drill using the verbs "return," "restore," "send," "get." Learner says and writes responses.

  3. Teacher introduces Power Bill vocabulary and sample AEP power bill

  4. Paired learners participate in jigsaw activity: class divides into four/five pairs; each pair assigned 4-5 vocabulary words to locate on the sample power bill; learners use context clues to define terms.

  5. Paired learners review power bill, underlining unfamiliar terms and circling new lesson verbs and lesson vocabulary.

  6. Teacher defines remaining unfamiliar power bill terms.

  7. Learners participate in restatement drill using Paying Your Electric Bill question strips.

  8. Whole class shares and critiques question strips. 

Assessment:

 

Learners offer corrections and comments to oral responses; teacher monitors written work and verbal responses for completeness and accuracy.
