Crossroads Cafe: "Who's the Boss?" Act 2

 

Objectives:

  • The learner will correctly pronounce key phrases and words and identify them during the story.

  • The learner will make predictions about two of the story's main characters.

  • The learner will describe the emotions of the story's characters using the characters' actions and facial expressions. 

Duration:

 

    2 hours

 

Materials:

Activities:

  1. Teacher reviews Act 1 of "Who's the Boss" by calling on each learner to describe in chronological order something that happened in the first part of the story. Learners review pronunciation of Act 1 words and phrases.

  2. Learners practice pronouncing words and phrases in Part 1 of the Act 2 worksheet.

  3. Learners listen to Act 2 with vision off. Learners work in pairs to summarize the plot and settings in Act 2. Learners share their summaries with the class.

  4. Learners view Act 2 with vision on, sound on; class re-evaluates and shares summaries.

  5. Learners complete parts 2 and 3 of worksheet individually.

  6. Teacher runs video again, pausing at scenes that give learners opportunities to describe emotions from facial expressions and as a result of the actions of other characters (for example: Jamal talking to his old friends at the cocktail party and Victor Brashov waiting for a call from The Restaurant News.

  7. Learners view "Culture Clip," comparing Jamal with real life professor-turned-pizza delivery person. Learners discuss how their experiences are similar/different.

Assessment:

 

Teacher monitors verbal responses, checks written responses for comprehension and offering corrections to grammar as required.
